Local athletes advance to AAU Junior Olympics
RSES AthletesLillian Spivey and Kellan Black, incoming second graders at Rancho Sienna Elementary, recently qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympics. Both athletes compete in the 8 and under age group for the Texas Thunder Track Club out of Cedar Park. To qualify for the Junior Olympics each one had to advance from a District and Regional qualifier. Lillian competed in the 400, 800 and 4x100 relay and advanced to Regional competition in all three events. She then placed 6th in the 4x100 with a team time of 1:12.40 at the Regional competition to earn her ticket to the Junior Olympics. Kellan competed in the 100, Long Jump and Turbo Javelin at district competition and advanced in the two field events. Kellan won a bronze medal in the Turbo Javelin with a throw of 39’ 10” to advance to national competition. He placed 7th in the Long Jump, missing out on qualifying by one place. Texas Thunder owner, Robert Roddy, stated “We are so proud of these two athletes, Lillian improved so much throughout the year and almost qualified in the 800 meters as well, where Kellan struggled with some medical issues throughout the season but finished strong to qualify for nationals. We are looking forward to both of these athletes competing at a high level for years to come.” The AAU Junior Olympics will be held in Des Moines, Iowa on the campus of Drake University from July 28 - August 4.
